Alan Alikatuktuk grew up in Paallavvik, near Broughton Island ans is the youngest of five children. Three of his siblings are artists: Annie Pitsiulak and Ananaisie Alikatuktuk, and Thomasie Alikatuktuk was a well-known printmaker. Alan is a full-time hunter and fisherman, and has only sporadically done drawings for the Pangnirtung Tapestry Studio.
