Notes from DaVic Gallery: An intriguing composition with a mystical flare, this mixed media drawing by Eegyvudluk Ragee maintains the symmetry of elements typical of her other drawings. Two mother birds with their chicks occupy the centre of the drawing, facing each other. The fact that they carry their chicks on their backs makes us think of the traditional way mothers carry their children in their amauti. Two polar bears frame the composition on either side, with one enjoying the catch of the day. At the bottom, two gulls, possibly engaged in a mating dance, provide a grounding element to the overall composition. The expressions of the animals and the dominant warm tones of the drawing leave us with a sense of warmth and contentment, signalling the abundance the land provides for all living creatures.
