Notes from DaVic Gallery: Inuit are great hunters able to find food year-round. During winter they hunt mainly for sea-mammals near the ice, though they would hunt beluga whales in the open water. When a hunt is successful, the entire community is called to collect a share of the hunt with the hunters and their families receiving the most preferred parts. Some communities, however, use whale meat only to feed dogs. In other communities, males eat some parts of the whale only, while females other parts only. This creates or reinforces certain social dependency or roles between males and females.
