Notes from DaVic Gallery: What is recognizable in this print is the boldness of colours and strange but consistent use of patterns that Saimaiyu uses in her works that become her signature style now. What we see new here is the use of checkers! Yes, I have seen stripes, curved lines, dots, but we see a new pattern in this print, the checkers. Near consistent tone of blue, but we see varied hues of red that give the print certain “softness”. Saimaiyu does not stop taking risks with such bold style of bold colours in the middle of such ample white space. Here we seem to need the large white space in the upper right quadrant to help balance the weight of the bear that feels to lean towards lower left area. Another bold statement Saimaiyu makes with this print is its large footprint required by the large size of paper. Lovely! Nonetheless the technicalities, this bear looks well fed and seems to have detected a new scent in the air … I’d call this piece one of my favourites in this collection.
