Description
Untitled (Cleaning Seals) by Shuvinai Ashoona – Inuit Art from Cape Dorset 2023 original hand drawing collection presented by DaVic Gallery of Native Canadian Arts.
Condition: No condition noted. It is common that original drawings will show minor handling marks and probably stains caused by the artist themselves. It is also common to see, particularly with Shuvinai’s drawings, uneven paper trimming.
Description by Artist: No description by artist found.
Notes from DaVic Gallery: After a long hard day of hunting and gathering two women labour cleaning the skin of seals caught by the men of the group. One removes the fat using her ulu while the other washes another skin. There are two young children playing inside the tent while a baby sleeps over the mother’s amauti stretched over the floor. There is another seal waiting to be cleaned too.
The large size of this drawing is good indication how significant this moment for Shuvinai, as simple and routine it may appear to be. I invited myself into the moment, though I didn’t really help much but I sure enjoyed their company.
The blank sheet of letter-size (8.5” x 11”) paper covering part of the image in the last picture is for size reference.
