Notes from DaVic Gallery:    Often, the viewer asks the artist for the “story” of a piece, seeking a legend or a myth to anchor their understanding. With In the Eye of the Beholder, Robert Davidson playfully declines that request. Released during a pivotal era of abstraction in his career, this 1993 serigraph is an invitation to silence the noise of explanation.

Davidson believed that once a piece is finished, it belongs to the viewer’s experience. In this work, the master of Haida formline challenges us to find our own narrative within the bold ovoids and delicate “ghost” forms. It is a masterpiece of balance that reminds us that art is not just seen—it is felt.

The blank sheet of letter-size (8.5” x 11”) paper covering part of the image in the last picture is for size reference.
