Description
‘Mishipeshieuw’ by Jim Oskineegish – First Nations Woodland Art presented by DaVic Gallery of Native Canadian Arts
Condition: mild scrapping visible on lower right corner area. Even milder scrapping visible top middle edge.
Description by Artist: this is a painting of a powerful water spirit called Mishipeshievw or also known as the Great Underwater Panther. This spirit dwells in the far deep depths of our fresh water lakes.
The Mishipeshievw can make travel on lakes dangerous by creating strong winds resulting in large waves. Anishnabek offer tobacco to this powerful spirit as a gift for him and to request safe passage from him before canoeing on the lakes and river systems.
