Notes from DaVic Gallery: Just as other Jutai Toonoo’s works, this one may leave you wondering whether you are looking at Intuit art. But if you have come across Jutai Toonoo’s unique drawings, you wouldn’t question it. You would study it and admire it for its originality and depth of thought.
At first, you might think you are looking at the topography of the land from a bird’s-eye view at night time. Quite possibly, you are. You can see the blue of the sea, the white of the snow, the brown of the sediment and the green of the Arctic flora. You might appreciate and admire the intricate pattern of the landscape as it unfolds before your eyes on Canson black paper.
And then you see something else. In fact, it might be the first thing that strikes you. And it’s the unfolding of the female anatomy, with all its revealing curvature, exuding feminine eroticism.
It draws you in as you follow the lines of the right hip at the top of the drawing, curving toward the middle to form the shape of the buttocks, releasing your gaze in the bottom right corner once you see the left hip and bent leg. But it doesn’t let you go there. You are drawn right back into it, studying the upper right corner, catching up with your brain interpreting the more delicate folds and curves of the female landscape. You get a sense of the subject’s openness and desire. As a viewer, you become a part of the very moment when she invites her lover to touch, taste and inhale her, as her fragrance fills the upper corner of the drawing.
Such blending of two natural words, the land and the female body, is a reflection of Toonoo’s unique drawing style and his genius, also on display in the drawing titled Inuung. It is also a reflection of his ability to be intimate and raw, whether he depicts himself or, in this case, we assume, his lover. This captivating drawing is waiting for the right collector who would know how and where to display such a revealing piece that would be sure to spark a conversation.
