Notes from DaVic Gallery: another unmistakable print by Saimaiyu with her signature bright bold coulored birds. Almost neon looking for their brightness. Here we see two beautiful birds side by side touching at the body. One slightly larger than the other. Their beaks give them impression, the feeling that they are smiling at each other. Looking at this print, Saimaiyu’s “Courting Birds” comes to mind, which while the print suggests the birds are courting, Akesuk said the birds actually represent her and a good friend, Makittu. “We grew up together,” Akesuk said. “It’s that look we give each other when we want to say something, but it comes out as a laugh instead.” As is evident in many of her prints, Akesuk continues to be influenced by her late grandfather’s (Latchaolassie) bird carvings.
