Description by Artist: ‘Salmon Cedar Rope – State I’ – All the imagery in this print is connected by nitrogen 15. Nitrogen 15 is an essential element, traceable because of its chemical composition, and found in the deep ocean. The element is found in salmon, bears and even the trees and songbirds of the forest. The bears drag their catch of salmon under the trees, which absorb the traces of nitrogen 15 through their roots – these chemical links illustrate the connections between all living things as this element is transferred through the web of life.
Notes from DaVic Gallery: The reflection of four runs through much of Susan Point’s work. It carries many important meanings to all First Nation’s people who strive to express in ceremony and in symbology the significance of four in First Nation’s life. There are four seasons, four races, four directions or four winds, four elements (fire, water, earth, air) and so on, each of which must be respected equally for their gift of life.
