Notes from DaVic Gallery: Very active design in this composition where I get the sense that the masked teenager and the lady looking at him are the main subjects. We see a very busy composition with children arriving to the storytime gathering while others already are scared from the stories being told. This new Halloween activity adopted into Inuit recreation replaces the older times where legends are shared in more intimate surroundings in a camp setting. Many of Ashoona’s works show precisely this, the new culture or the transition Inuit culture is undergoing into modernization. Surroundings do not change much though as in some communities in Nunavut, Halloween door to door trick or treating is now allowed as this coincides with polar bear season that puts children in danger of becoming a bear’s appetizer.
