‘Shaman, Sedna Transformation’ by Pitseolak Qimirpik – Inuit Art from Cape Dorset 2022 original hand drawing collection presented by DaVic Gallery of Native Canadian Arts.
Condition: Minor paper handling marks visible in the back of paper.
Description by Artist: No description by artist.
Notes from DaVic Gallery: Very active and dynamic composition of transformation where sea mammals, Sedna, the goodness of the sea and shaman are undergoing and during transformation where no form is finalized. We see the body of Sedna, goddess of the sea, with tail, mid-body of a bear and human upper body. We see the upper body of a beluga and a seal in the middle while both their tails are near Sedna’s tail. We also see three different faces emerging from Sedna’s tail as if trying to decide which wone to pick. There see, to be two bears, one beside the seal and one underneath the human upper body. All this is happening in a beautiful landscape of sea, sun and hills.
We can see the next stage of transformation in another drawing, ‘Transformation Sedna‘.
Some of Pits’ sculptures represent similar composition of transformation.
The blank sheet of letter-size (8.5” x 11”) paper covering part of the image in the last picture is for size reference.
