Condition:          Misaligned paper trim.   Note that it is common also that original drawings will show minor handling marks and probably stains caused by the artist themselves.  It is also common to see, particularly with Shuvinai’s drawings, uneven paper trimming.

Notes from DaVic Gallery:   Untitled (Sunny Day) is a quintessential example of Shuvinai Ashoona‘s ability to document the social fabric of Kinngait (Cape Dorset) through a lens that is simultaneously naturalistic and surreal. Created in 2022, a period marking Ashoona’s ascent to international acclaim following her participation in the Venice Biennale, this work showcases the artist’s matured “frieze-style” composition.

The work features a lineup of seven figures, a recurring motif in Ashoona’s oeuvre that explores community identity. While the figures are grounded in the reality of Northern life—clad in meticulously rendered amautiit and parkas—there is a psychological depth to their arrangement. The central figure, cradling a child within the hood of her amauti, serves as the compositional anchor. The figures’ direct, unwavering gaze toward the viewer creates an intimate dialogue, breaking the “fourth wall” and inviting the observer into the communal space of the North.

Ashoona’s technical mastery is evident in her “pointillist” approach to colored pencil. Rather than applying flat washes of color, she utilizes a dense network of stippling and cross-hatching to build form. This technique creates a vibrating, tactile surface that mimics the heavy wool and synthetic textures of contemporary Arctic apparel. The palette—dominated by high-saturation yellows, lime greens, and vibrant oranges—departs from the monochromatic tropes of historic Inuit art, positioning the work firmly in the contemporary “Sunny Day” atmosphere described by the title.

The work subtly incorporates the “hybridity” for which Ashoona is celebrated. While primarily a domestic scene, the stylized, almost fluid silhouettes of the outer garments hint at the transformative nature of Inuit mythology. The inclusion of modern floral patterns on the central figure’s leggings provides a vital “temporal marker,” signaling the intersection of traditional Inuit culture and globalized modern life.

As a recipient of the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts (2024), Shuvinai Ashoona’s recent works have become highly sought after by major institutions and private collectors alike. Untitled (Sunny Day) represents a serene yet powerful entry in her body of work, offering a rare moment of overt optimism and communal harmony. It is a foundational piece for any collection focusing on the evolution of Indigenous Surrealism and the “Kinngait School” of drawing.
