Description
‘Tasiupata’ by Shuvinai Ashoona – Inuit Art from Cape Dorset 2023 original hand drawing collection presented by DaVic Gallery of Native Canadian Arts.
Condition: No condition noted. It is common that original drawings will show minor handling marks and probably stains caused by the artist themselves. It is also common to see, particularly with Shuvinai’s drawings, uneven paper trimming. This drawing has unfinished drawing in the back too.
Description by Artist: No description by artist found.
Notes from DaVic Gallery: Busy, colourful and friendly drawing that Suvinai must have decided to draw on a leftover long and narrow piece of paper rather than throwing the paper away. In fact, it also has an unfinished ink drawing on the back of the paper. In this drawing 17 individuals well clothed for the cold wearing parkas and thick jacked and mittens hold hands forming a friendly human chain. One person, in the left side of the drawing, seems to be running a bit late for the picture.
Clearly this composition is creation of Shuvinai and the overall work is a collaboration with Padloo Samayualie. You can definitely identify the most careful and delineated colouring of the faces, clothing and objects that form part of the composition to be Padloo’s contribution as it is common to see Shuvinai’s colouring a bit scratchier.
The blank sheet of letter-size (8.5” x 11”) paper covering part of the image in the last picture is for size reference.
