“Water Baby and Sea Dog” by Eegyvudluk Ragee – Inuit Art – Cape Dorset 1961 print collection presented by DaVic Gallery of Native Canadian Arts. Framing recommended for display.
Condition: Professionally restored for heavy discoloration and framer tape markings. Fading condition of the paper did not permit for full and even restoration and matburn marking remains with overall paper fading in the area exposed by mat window. Some tape marking remain top edge verso for the heavy tape used previously that penetrated the paper. Unidentified pen markings bottom edge of paper. Overall image is successfully restored and remaining condition can be covered with framing mat.

Notes from DaVic Gallery: Eegyvudluk Ragee (1920-1983) was a master of capturing the ‘mutability’ of forms. In this piece, we dive deep into a playful (or perhaps territorial) encounter between two mythical aquatic figures:
- The Sea Dog: A powerful body of a seal capped with the alert, sharp-toothed head of a dog.
- The Water Baby: A young seal pup bearing the soft, expressive face of a boy.
Are they playing in the depths, or is this a shamanic struggle between spirits? That ambiguity is exactly what makes Ragee’s early work so collectible and enduring.
