Notes from DaVic Gallery:   Yes, first interpretation of this print is in reference to spiritual growth perhaps?  However, it is not common for Simaiyu to depict spiritual or Shamanistic references in her prints.  Rather she more commonly presents animals that surround her in abstract and exaggerated forms.  It prevails her use of bold forms and colours though.   This print reminds and strikes me more as a larger, bolder and more colourful variation of “Looking Up” with a bird standing upright and looking … up.  Could the three levels of colours be light reflecting in the background to the bird she was looking at the time and the blue being water in the background too?  Nonetheless tis observations this print is amazing play with colours and abstraction.

Another interesting observation is the changing line patterns from the inner to second to third outer layer initiating with crisscrossed pattern, to line-dashed pattern in the second layer, to aligned continuous line patterns in the outermost layer.  I wonder if this might have some spiritual relevance after all … what do you think?
