Notes from DaVic Gallery: In “The Energy Within,” Jim Oskineegish moves from the communal council into the internal landscape of the soul. This piece is less about a “story” and more about the composition of the human spirit.
The Vessel: The Spirit Being The central form uses the tail of the Turtle and limbs that echo the Otter—animals that navigate both land and water. The “missing” head suggests that in this spiritual state, we are not led by the ego or the physical eyes, but by the Spirit Heart. The body is open, serving as a container for the ancestral powers that guide us.
The Internal Residents: Bear, Eagle, and Fish Instead of standing around a shaman, these animals are inside the being.
-
The Bear represents the internal strength and the “medicine” we carry for self-healing.
-
The Eagle represents the higher perspective and the prayers that reside in our thoughts.
-
The Fish (often sturgeon or trout in Woodland art) represent the depth of the subconscious and the ability to survive in the deep, emotional waters of life.
The Four Directions: The Circles of Balance The four circles you identified are critical. In Anishinaabe culture, the Four Directions (North, South, East, and West) are the pillars of the universe. Their presence here indicates that the “Energy Within” is perfectly aligned with the natural laws of the Creator. It suggests a person who is Level and Integrated—one who knows where they stand in the cosmos.
The Lines of Energy: Interconnectedness The bold power lines connecting the animals to the outer shell show that our internal strengths are not isolated; they are constantly vibrating and communicating with the world around us.
Conclusion: “The Energy Within” is about the individual integrity required to show up to that meeting. It represents the self-actualization and internal reconciliation that must happen before true external change is possible. It is a powerful reminder that our “energy” is composed of the wisdom of our ancestors and the balance of the natural world.
