Description by Artist: “The Lovers was inspired by Picasso’s ‘Figures by the sea’. A painting with another sexual theme, distorted and deformed madness. It’s titled “The Lovers” but it ain’t even romantic at all, it’s more monstrous. Personally I could never fit love and sex together, in my mind they are totally opposite. I even asked my closest friends “How do you make sex out to be love, or love out be sex, because in my mind they don’t fit together?” They gave me their answers but I still couldn’t see it the way they saw it, perhaps I am wired a little different, being a sexual independent individual sounds rather lonely to me.” – Riel Benn
Notes from DaVic Gallery: Riel is noticeably influenced by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Andy Warhol, and others and he adapts this influence into his Native motif art.
