Notes from DaVic Gallery:   Witness is a harrowing recreation of an event that’s all too common in Nunavut, with a hooded figure pointing a rifle at a man on his knees with his hands in the air making a “don’t shoot” gesture.  Piona says he actually saw somebody pointing a rifle at somebody, nobody was shot… but he saw that. This print, as well as “Self Defense”, brings balance in Inuit art between the traditional Inuit scenes that are often favoured by collectors of Inuit art and the often-hard reality of life in Pangnirtung.  Inuit culture has evolved adapting to harsh conditions and today remain struggling to evolve and identify and adapt to the strong influence of modernization and living in an economic system with its benefits and its social changes.
