Notes from DaVic Gallery:   with so many amazing print designs released with each annual Cape Dorset print collections, in my opinion this is one of the most hypnotizing and captivating designs.  While deceivingly simple and unassuming, a close and detailed look reveals so much intricacy and technical skill not only on the design itself but the perfect stone scratching by Qavavau Manumie.  The head reveals intensity and softness and direction that give the viewer the necessary perception of the direction this owl’s feathers align to.  Most amazing are the feathers on the tail that give the perception that this owl is from a stone sculpture with incredible 3D depth.  The way the owl’s head is tilted and how the eyes fix on the viewer’s eyes is simply hypnotic. This is perhaps the only one single print design I feel the artist’s intention to create curious interaction, in addition to admiration, between the viewer and the subject of the print design.  There is no alarmed reaction by the owl, simply a curious stare back. How can one not feel that hidden sensation that Leonardo da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ gives the viewer that the subject is following you with her/its eyes.

The blank sheet of letter-size (8.5” x 11”) paper covering part of the image in the last picture is for size reference.
