Description
‘Fish Helps Kiviuq’ by Victoria Mamnguqsualuk (Mamngushualuk) – Inuit Art – Baker Lake 1999 print collection presented by DaVic Gallery of Native Canadian Arts.
Condition: No condition to report.
Artist Description: This is a story Victoria tells describing a wall-hanging depicting the same legend… “Kiviuq had a wife who was a timiaq (goose). While Kiviuq was out hunting, his wife and the children left him. Kiviuq followed them and when he came to the ocean he wanted to cross it. (I did not put this in my wall hanging but there was a man by the shore chopping wood, and the chips became big fish.) Kiviuq climbed onto a big fish and crossed the ocean… to look for his wife… Those are the legends I used to hear when I was a teenager. I still have some that I remember, and if I do not know what to put in a wall hanging I put a legend in.”
