Notes from DaVic Gallery – Ningeokuluk Teevee’s ‘Hazard’ represents a bold, thought-provoking departure from her renowned mythic and legendary themes, offering an incisive commentary on the realities of modern Arctic life. Turning her focus to the environmental impact of human presence, Teevee presents a scene where nature and global consumerism collide.
The composition is built around a heavy central mound of debris and earth, framed along the top by a delicate chain-link fence. This grid-like barrier visually divides the landscape, marking a clear boundary between human development and the surrounding environment. Within the mound, white arctic foxes and black ravens—creatures renowned in Inuit lore for their adaptability and intelligence—navigate through layers of trash.
Teevee’s execution utilizes high-contrast color pops to draw the viewer’s eye: the bright red Coca-Cola packaging at the bottom center anchors the foreground as a symbol of global corporate reach, juxtaposed against green waste and earth-toned layers. Rather than rendering the scene with despair, Teevee highlights the resilience of these animals as they forage and adapt to a changing habitat.
From a collector’s perspective, ‘Hazard’ offers exceptional desirability and collectability. It showcases Teevee not only as a master of traditional storytelling, but as an active observer of contemporary environmental issues. This unique juxtaposition of stark graphic clarity, social commentary, and animal symbolism makes ‘Hazard’ an essential addition to any serious collection of contemporary Indigenous art.
The blank sheet of letter-size (8 ½ x 11 in) paper covering part of the image in the scale reference picture is provided for size comparison, offering an immediate sense of the drawing’s scale and presence.
