Notes from DaVic Gallery – In ‘Immobilized,’ Ningeokuluk Teevee applies her keen power of observation to contemporary global culture. Four figures sit in shared space yet remain completely engrossed in their handheld screens, captured with Teevee’s clean, expressive line work. Floating around them in vibrant turquoise are the icons of digital life: a Bluetooth emblem, a power button, a coffee cup, an electrical outlet, and a prominent 5G signal complete with upload and download arrows.
The title ‘Immobilized’ plays brilliantly on the idea of mobile technology. While these devices grant us instant, mobile access to the world, they simultaneously freeze us in place—physically static and emotionally distant from the people right beside us. Details like the number “43” (evoking battery level or screen time) and a device plugged directly into a wall outlet emphasize our physical and psychological reliance on constant re-charging.
Teevee’s restrained palette and flat perspective accentuate this sense of detachment, turning a daily ritual into a captivating piece of modern visual narrative. This large-scale drawing stands out as an extraordinary, thought-provoking statement piece for collectors of contemporary Indigenous art.
The blank sheet of letter-size (8 1/2 x 11 in) paper covering part of the image in the scale reference picture is provided for size comparison, offering an immediate sense of the drawing’s scale and presence.
