Notes from DaVic Gallery – Ningeokuluk Teevee offers a clever visual narrative in ‘Raven’s Inspirations.’ While the composition distinctly features the form of a majestic owl — complete with wide, watchful eyes and a solid body — the title points directly to Raven, the legendary creator and trickster figure of Inuit mythology.
Rather than a contradiction, Teevee creates a rich visual dialogue connecting the two birds. The dark, black-tipped feathers along the wing evoke the mythic tale of the Owl and the Raven, where Raven’s feathers were stained black. Across the owl’s body, delicate line drawings depict an array of everyday items — an airplane, a cell phone, clothing, tools, and fish — suggesting that Raven’s creative, inventive energy is actively inspiring the owl.
Set against a rich, dark blue paper, this original work balances graphic charm with mythic intrigue, making it an extraordinary statement piece for collectors of modern Cape Dorset art.
The blank sheet of letter-size (8 ½ x 11 in) paper covering part of the image in the scale reference picture is provided for size comparison, offering an immediate sense of the drawing’s scale and presence.
